Hi, everyone!

3 months ago I got my i5 eDrive40 as a gift for my birthday and I have been in love with it since then.
I don't have anything to complain about, except for one thing:
The exterior lights of the car are randomly turning on.
What could be the reason? I tried to find one, but no results.
Nothing on the dashboard indicates something is wrong, and I check for open doors, the key fob and card are with me every time.

Today I found the car light on again. And it was locked because as I was approaching I could hear the car unlocked.

BMW support only told me to bring the car in for the service.
This is what I am going to do.
Still, is anyone here who experienced the same thing?

Let me know, please!

It might be the fact that you approach with your phone. When you do that, the car activates its welcome lights and then unlocks.

Use that feature that allows you to drive without keys. Try to keep the keys far from the car and see what happens.

Totally agree with @wheelsoverEV! If the fob’s too close to the car, it can definitely trigger the lights. But yeah, getting your ride serviced is a smart move for your peace of mind, esp. if you think there might be a little glitch with the key fob or something!

When you walk up to your car with the key, it detects the key’s presence and turns on the side lights, but it won’t unlock until you get a bit closer. If your phone is set up as a key, it might be responding to that, or maybe it’s your key fob. If the car fails to unlock after several attempts at sensing you, it eventually goes into a sleep mode.

@Abbrevi8tor and everyone else, thanks for all the suggestions!

I took the car in for service, and they found a freaking minor issue with the key fob. Imagine that!
It was sending occasional signals to the car, even when I wasn't hearing it (fking stupid).
They did a software update and recommended I keep the fob far from the car (you were right @wheelsoverEV and @Achillesking).
So far, the problem has been solved. I will keep an eye on it.

Thanks again!
